Ontario Provincial Championship 2018 - Results added

Post by Mac » Sat May 19, 2018 2:16 pm

The Provincial Championship will be hosted by the Grenville Club on Saturday, August 11th, 2018.

The match will take place on a 20 lane course with three targets per lane and one shot per target, resulting in a 60 shot match. There will be a four minute limit to take the three shots per lane. Many of the regulars would have to go at half speed to get even close to using up that much time. Except for the hit zone sizes and three targets per lane, this will be very much like a WFTF match. The biggest difference, most will find, is that you do not get a second chance if you miss the first shot.

The gates will be open by 8:00 AM and the sight-in will start at 9:00 AM. There is no shooting allowed at the Grenville club before 9:00 AM, so that is why the range opens at that time. I think I will allow a full hour of sighting this time and have the shooter's meeting at 10:00 AM. The match will start at 10:15 and should last two and a half to three hours. At that time, any shoot-offs would be held, if necessary. Results would then be tallied and awards given out.

A couple of thing will, in all likelihood, result in this timeline being altered as time passes. There is a good chance that there will be some form of fun shoot on the sight-in course from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, like the gunslinger event we had last year. It was a blast! That would push the match start time to 11:15 AM.

There is also a good possibility that camping, in tents only, will be allowed this year at this match. If there are some that want to camp, I would come on Friday and camp over so we would have use of the washrooms, etc. On the map, linked below, the camping could be to the right when you pull in where it says "Enter" on the map. It is a nice grassy area with a pond and vegetation between the camping area and the road. This area puts us directly across from the clubhouse and well away from the house at the top of the map. I know some guys snore pretty loud.

If there are enough that commit to the match early enough, I will look into having Subway sandwiches and beverages as the awards are handed out.

I will be posting a reminder at the beginning of August for this match, but feel free to contact me if you already know you will be attending; I have the signup sheet ready to go. I will add a running total of how many are in each class as I receive notifications.

A reminder that the Provincials are just a week and a day away. We have 10 that have committed to attend.

If you have not let me know, please do so as I intend to have some subs there for after the match. Will be ordering the subs tomorrow.

Knowing who is going to attend and not having surprises makes things much easier. Please include the class you will be shooting in.

Thanks.

Here is the charts from the match with a short write up below:

The third Provincial Championship at Grenville drew a good number of shooters. We had shooters in Open PCP, Hunter Piston, WFTF Piston and WFTF PCP, for a total of 14 competitors. They came in from Montreal to Cambridge and locations between. Unfortunately some of the guys are heading to the World match next week and were too busy to make the trip. The match was 60 shots, on 20 lanes with three targets per lane, but only one shot per target. This is quite different from our regular matches where you can miss the first shot and have an opportunity to adjust and shoot the target again. No second chances.

We had the sight in range ready for 9:00 AM and after the sight in, we held the Gunslinger match. Geoff MacGregor won the PCP match and Marc Shelleau won the piston match.

The match started close to 11:00 AM, about what we were hoping for. There was some great shooting and lots of chatter during the match. The weather was as close to perfect as one can hope for. The targets functioned well, except one of the high targets had the string come off and the target had to be pulled from the match, since we did not have a ladder handy to get up there to reattach the string.

The winners of the five classes were Dean in Open PCP, Marc in Hunter Piston, Tim in WFTF Piston and Brian in WFTF PCP. There were no shoot offs this year.

The format used takes longer than a regular 60 shot match due to the fact that there are 20 lanes and the getting up and transitioning between lanes takes time. It was late when we finished and unfortunately some of the group had to leave. We went ahead with award presentations and a few of us did the final cleanup before we hit the road.

Many thanks to all that attended, those that pitched in to get the range and Gunslinger match up and running, those that cleaned up afterward and Ryan who ran the Gunslinger event again this year. Thanks to John Bradley for taking pictures, which we all enjoy and providing targets for the Gunslinger. Thanks to the GF&GC for the use of their excellent facility. A big thanks to John Birch for making up our sight in target holders and helping me get them set up on the Friday before the match. Lastly, thanks to all that attended and made the day the success that it was.

A huge thank you to Dave and Jeff who came out with me on August 4th to get all the extra targets installed on the course and arranging all the numbers. Dave did a great job of getting good variety in the order of targets on each lane. It was a very hot day and a lot of work was done.

The next match at Grenville is scheduled for Sunday, September 16th and it will be a regular 60 shot match, shot on ten lanes, with three targets per lane and two shots per target.

Great shoot and a big thank you to all who volunteered their time and efforts to making it a success.
The weather was great as Tim mentioned and even the mosquitoes took a break thanks to an aversion to garlic.
Definitely on the repeat list.

Great pics like always John, thanks for taking the time to share. Excellent match Tim. I really enjoyed the 1 shot per target format. Thanks also to the guys who put in the leg work to get the course set up and dialed in.

Tim, once again under your match direction, a first class event. Lots of volunteers are required to make these events happen - thanks to all that donated time to make the day the success it was. Looking forward to 2019!

Cheers
Brian
