Which Sightron Scope for FT?

Post by Mtl_Biker » Wed Jun 28, 2017 8:49 am

I'm ready to move up to a (much) better scope for FT. It'll probably be a Sightron, but I'm very confused about their offerings and the different models and features. Could someone please give me a brief tutorial on this stuff?

I *think* I want to get a 10-50x60 with illuminated reticle. I've heard terms like FFP (and I think SFP or was it SPF?) and don't understand what they mean. Also "LR Narrow Duplex" and "LR Wide Duplex".

I'm thinking of an MOA reticle, maybe what they call the MOA-2. Should the turrets adjust in 1/4 or 1/8 MOA?

And probably a lot more questions that I don't know enough to ask about. Any help would be appreciated.

Also any recommendation on where to buy in Canada? I see that Tesro, Brandon Optics and Hirsch Precision are all dealers.

(I'll be moving up from Hawke Airmax 30 SF scopes... I have three of them, 4-16x50, 6-24x50 and 8-32x50.)

Probably the best thing to do is search/read through the American FT website
http://www.network54.com/Forum/451309

There's been a bunch of talk about these scopes there. It all boils down to personal preference though, there are a lot of options you can choose from.

They made/make a FT specific model that ranges from 9-55 yards, but feedback isn't good on those ones. You want the 10-300 range one (or have the 9-55 reparallexed)

FFP is first focal plane - the reticle changes size with the magnification. Don't know of any who use that feature in FT though.

1/4 clicks is what I'd use (and many others do too) as then when clicking, you don't have to turn the turret as far.

I'd not get a duplex reticle, having mil dots or MOA reticle gives you more 'options' from an aiming perspective. Héctor in the US sells a special one with a tonne of dots on the reticle, which can be really if you don't click but use holdover.

Don't know where to get them in Canada, personally I try to buy all my scopes used out of the US airgun classified forum, as I save a lot of $$ this way. Usually when I ask nicely, the seller is willing to ship it to Canada via USPS.

I think a illuminated reticle is a big help, I'd be sure to get that option.

Good luck!

D&L Airgun https://www.dlairgun.com has about 10 different models Sightron Scopes on their site. Dean and Joel use Sightron scopes. Tom can tell you hoe to get in touch with them for their opinions.

D&L? I never even thought of them (and I've bought LOTS from them) because when I did a Google search for Sightron Scopes Canada they didn't come up.

Thanks!

I read this from Hector who really analyzes things. I have the .5 mil version and like it and many, if not most, prefer the moa scope since the chance of having to use more than one revolution for all ranges is greatly reduced. I use a number of clicks and one of the hash marks for ranges from 8 to 10 meters. I use meters instead of yards when I set my scope up.

I bough my scope used for a good price. If I was ordering a new one, I would go with the quarter clicks as Tom suggested. I really like the illuminated dot in the centre.

Thanks. I read that post by Hector (and know him from the GTA forum where we've exchanged many messages) and it's so high tech that I had trouble (as a newbie) understanding it all.

I've located a new #25010 at a good price, but it's got 1/8 MOA instead of 1/4. Do you think that would/should be a deal breaker?

Further to the discussion of 1/4 or 1/8 MOA... if you look on the Sightron sight, it seems that for FT use they ONLY offer 1/8 MOA in the two scopes they offer. .05 MRAD in the Mil-Hash model.

So it's probably not a problem to go with 1/8. ???

If you can get a good price on the 1/8, and it has all the other features you want (illuminated reticle is really nice) then go for it. The only downside with 1/8 is that you'll have to turn the turret more - possibly beyond 1 rotation. Going beyond 1 rotation introduces another potential 'oops' where you don't properly reset it to the correct position, and then you're 'out a rotation'. This sounds like a silly slip up, but everyone does it time to time!

My Leupold Competitions are both 1/8 and my Nikko is also 1/8 - the 1/4 is a 'nice feature' but historically high magnification FT scopes are 1/8. Only recently have manufactures started offering these high magnification scopes in 1/4 (I think)

Did it! I ordered the SIIISS 10-50x60 FTIRMOA #25010 scope today from D&L. I'm paying extra for Expedited shipping in hopes that I get it early next week and can set it up in time for the Grenville club FT shoot on the 9th.

Guess I'll be putting my 3-month old Hawke Airmax 30 SF 8-32x50 scope up for sale next week.

Thanks guys for your help.
