2018 Canadian Nationals Results and Troyer Rating - Pictures Added

Post by pirellip » Wed Aug 22, 2018 11:43 am

I'm sorry for the delay with these, but y'all know the saying: "better late..."

This year's course was the most difficult when measured by the Troyer scale. But as you can all see, several competitors still shot very well!

Also, we had zero faulty targets (meaning they needed to be pulled from the match) We did have a few broken strings, and a few targets that needed to be re-secured after being pulled forward, but NO protests! Everyone who setup targets really did a great job!

This write up was done by Joel.

- Canadian Airgun Field Target Association - 2018 Canadian National Championship

Another year has passed and another fun and exciting Canadian Nationals have come to a close. I cannot believe over a year has gone by and we are now on our second Nationals with Tom Peretti as Match Director, who has been doing a fantastic job. On a personal note, Nationals always marks the beginning of intense practice for World Championships, this year is no exception; I have gone through over 2500 pellets in the last two weeks in preparation for Poland and this year's Canadian Nationals was definitely great practice. With an overall Troyer factor of 36.05, I believe this is one of the most difficult Nationals ever held in Port Colborne (Odd course = 37 TF, Even course = 35.1 TF)

As usual Friday afternoon, people begin arriving at the club to set up lanes then shooting on the site in range usually follows shortly after. Once we had shot until the light was nearly gone from the sky a few of us decided to grab some food at the local favourite "Reeb House".

Saturday, day one of the competition, found the WFTF competitors on the odd-numbered lanes and all other divisions on the even-numbered lanes. It was a great day of shooting with a fairly close scoreboard at the end of the day, we were lucky to have the rain hold off until we were done shooting. Once the shooting was done everyone went over to the Reeb House for a great supper and some airgun chatter. Unfortunately, the rain continued thru supper and later into the evening, this caused us to have to cancel the gunslinger competition, along with complications with some of the targets. A few of us hung around the clubhouse until the rain subsided later in the evening, at which point we resumed target practice on the sight in range until it was dark.

The leaders of each division following day one were as follows;
WFTF PCP = James Liu - 46/60
WFTF Piston = Joel Goodwin - 54/60
Open PCP = Don Irvine - 54/60
Hunter PCP = Ryan Landry - 111/120
Hunter PISTON = Mark Shelleau - 96/120

Sunday, day two of the competition, found the WFTF competitors on the even-numbered lanes and all other divisions on the odd-numbered lanes. Sunday seemed to provide us with more wind to deal with than Saturday did, which made the course that much more of a challenge. The way the course is laid within the bush the wind is more of an issue at the beginning and end of the course; the middle of the course is in a fairly heavily wooded area. Another challenging aspect on Sunday was the low lighting throughout the course, this is one of the obstacles to shooting in a wooded area, not to mention the bugs.

The even course felt like a more difficult course for me and part of this was likely due to the wind factor, as the even course actually had a lower Troyer Factor. But looking thru the difficulty of the positional lanes I can see another factor that would give the illusion of the even course being more difficult; the positional lanes on the even course were substantially more difficult than the odd course, especially the kneeling lanes.

EVEN Kneeling - (#2) 38.3 TF ODD Kneeling - (#19) 31.3 TF
EVEN Standing - (#18) 35.57 TF ODD Standing - (#7) 33.77 TF
Positional Average = 36.94 TF Positional Average = 32.54 TF

After everyone completed the course and returned to the clubhouse there was lunch from Subway waiting for us. Once everyone had had their lunch we had a draw for the prize table; a big thanks to Airgunsource for their generosity as well as the other companies and individuals who donated items or offered discounted pricing for items on this table; everyone was very excited and appreciative to have such support from within the Canadian FT community.

We did have one tie score for 3rd place in WFTF PCP, everyone went out to watch as John Birch and Brian Wernham competed in a very long and hard-fought shoot off, with John eventually taking the win. After the shoot-off was completed we gave out all the awards for the winners in all divisions and the 2018 Nationals officially came to a close.

I would like to thank everyone who works hard to make these events possible, it takes a lot of effort on many levels to organize and execute an event like this and it is greatly appreciated. It is also great to see all the helping hands before and after the matches, it goes a long way in reducing the setup/teardown time that people have to spend. (Also, sorry for the massive delay in having this write up done/sent out, there were some technical issues as well as some forgetfulness.)
