Dave's Winter Invitational

Post by Mac » Mon Nov 27, 2017 2:55 pm

This past weekend, six lucky guys were able to set up and shoot a fun match on Dave's property that is located just west of Smith Falls. We set up 24 targets on eight lanes in a beautiful cedar forest. The temperature went right up to a balmy -1 or -2 degrees C. We had been talking about a cold weather/winter match all season and Dave stepped up to make it happen. Thanks to Dave and his wife, Mary, who hosted the event.

One of the most avid proponents for a winter match was Ryan, who unfortunately was not able to attend because he stayed home to look after his wife and son who were ill. What a guy, eh!

With six of us going at it, the setup did not take long and the shooting started soon after a short sight-in. One of the reasons I was looking forward to this was to see how the gun shot in the cold and how well the scope performed at range finding at sub-zero temperatures. My questions were answered and fortunately all answers were positive. I think all the guys were pleasantly surprised at how well the guns performed. Cold affects everyone differently, but I have always been comfortable out in the cold. Maybe some of the others will tell of their experience.

The teardown of targets after the shooting was even quicker and before we knew it we were up in Dave and Mary's kitchen/dinning/ sitting room, just a beautiful space. We warmed up with some coffee and conversation for a time and then got into the chilli that was generously provided by Jeff. Thanks Jeff; I'd have to say that hit the spot for all of us. Shortly after the chilli, John Br. and Denis had to hit the road, but John Bi., Jeff, of course Dave and myself stayed a shot the breeze for some time. We spoke of this fun day, how we could improve it and what we would do different next time. I really liked the next time part.

After Dave took us on a tour of their beautiful and functional home, we said our goodbyes and the three of us headed for home. On behalf of all the guys, I would like to thank Dave and Mary for a fun and unforgettable day.

I hope John Br. will post some of the pictures he took throughout the day. Please! John always takes great shots. :D

Was indeed a fun time!!! Many thanks to Dave and Mary for having us out and Jeff for the chilli.

Only managed to take a few pictures at the sight-in range this time around... after that I was having too much fun shooting what ended up being my best scorecard this season... of course, the fact that when I was loading up targets to bring to the shoot somehow the ones with reducers got left behind, might've had something to do with that :)

Thanks to Tim for a great season of Field Target this year. Looking forward to the next one!!!

Speed is fine but accuracy is final. You must learn to slow down in a hurry.

Nice write up, thanks Tim. Or should I say Tim, "The Wildling" MacSweyn? Not like Hardcore Hemming, not even wearing a tuque! Thanks for posting the pics John, they're good like always. I'm sorry to have missed it, looks like a fun time. When's the next shoot?
